What is your lore?

I am a self-taught artist based in Southern Minnesota. I go by MoriMox, which is just some hodgepodge Latin I came up with. mori = death, mox = soon. But not in the ooga-booga-death-scary way; more of a reminder of what time we have (i.e. the 'memento mori' we have at home). Just trying to make friends with my mortality!I was the weird homeschooled kid growing up who did contortionist body horror tricks to entertain people. Turns out I have a connective tissue disorder called Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which causes a smorgasbord of other comorbid disorders. It is a dynamic disability caused by a mutation in my collagen resulting in dislocation of my joints, chronic pain, and dysautonomia. My disability definitely informs my perspective on life! When not making art, I’m spending time with my husband, playing with my cats, gardening, reading, thrift shopping, cooking vegan foods, playing videogames, planning my Halloween costume, or exploring parks and lakes.

What inspires you?

I'm inspired by life, death, fantasy, occult, medieval times, horror, nature, videogames, and TTRPGs. I love scary books and movies. My favorite director is probably Ari Aster and my favorite author Shirley Jackson. I've always loved videogames, and my favorites growing up were Pokemon, Bioshock, The Elder Scrolls games, Megaman Legends, Myst, and Deus Ex, among many others. My more recent faves are Inscryption, Mouthwashing, Baldur's Gate 3, Dark Souls, and Elden Ring. Fantasy and Horror are my escape, because I love being horrified by the imaginary instead of reality for a change!

FAQ

What is blockprinting?

Linocut blockprinting is a traditional type of relief printmaking. This art is created by using very sharp gouges and chisels to remove portions of a block of pressed linseed oil, rosin, wood flour, and other natural materials. The remaining shape is covered with ink using a brayer and then transferred to paper using a handheld baren or printing press. Every print comes out a little different!I love the analogue, handmade nature of this craft, especially in an age where prompting is supplanting creation/self-direction/discernment. It is so important to slow down and be intentional!

How long does it take to create a piece?

It is a multistep process including brainstorming, sketching, transferring, carving, and then inking! Depending on the size and complexity of the piece, it can take multiple sessions over multiple days, or I can knock it out in one sitting. For example, one project that was an 11x7 inch block took 6 hours just in the carving stage!

Can I get your art tattooed on me?

Yes! Please buy a ticket on my kofi to present to your tattoo artist, so that they know you have consent to use my art, and as compensation to me. Keep in mind that some artists will not tattoo art that they didn't personally design. Always do careful research on your artist and their portfolio to ensure their skill level and style matches the design that you bring to them. Depending on the body placement, alterations to the composition might need to be made.

Can I buy your art?

Yes, I have small original prints available in limited drops on my ebay storefront. :3
